089. JIMMY JIST

My name is Captain Noble. I am a superhero, working for the US Government. This is an excerpt from my journal.

YEAR 11, DAY 72

I was torn…CIA Headquarters had become a warzone, as the supervillains Attrition and Militia were locked in battle with Lt. Rashard Bonds and Captain KaBoom. And I, along with Shuttershock, was thousands of miles away in Tibet. I wanted to fly back and help, but Ramses Hondo, one of the most dangerous men in the world and my primary target for the better part of the last year, was possibly within my grasp.

The Story

The telepathic college student, Cosmo Cortez, was right in the thick of the battle. He had been telepathically sending me constant updates about what was happening, but with the fight intensifying, he was forced to focus his mind toward assisting Captain KaBoom. The updates were now coming less and less frequently. Furthermore, it sounded like Attrition and Militia were beginning to gain the upper hand. I made up my mind to temporarily abandon my pursuit of Ramses and head back to the States. But then I heard Cosmo’s voice in my head very clearly saying: “No! Stay! Jimmy’s got this!”

He was talking about his college roommate and best friend, Jimmy Jist. Jimmy is the true source behind Captain KaBoom’s powers. As I explained in the earlier parts of this entry, the Captain has no natural hyper-abilities of his own; instead, every incredible feat he performs is actually being done by Jimmy through telekinesis.

I’d met Jimmy, along with Cosmo, when I visited MIT a little while back… well, I wouldn’t say, “I met him” as much as I would say, he was there. He sort of just sat there, as Cosmo and I talked about how they were using their mental powers to transform average-joe Willie Barton into the superhero Captain KaBoom. I would learn soon enough that other than Cosmo, Jimmy had not spoken to much of anyone since discovering his telekinetic abilities. Well, at least not with his voice. Jimmy spent a lot of time on the Dark Web – the part of the internet that is literally unsearchable and unknown to 99 percent of the population. It’s a place where a lot of computer hackers, like Jimmy, hang out.

It was impossible to tell from just looking at him, but Jimmy was quite fond of pulling off what would usually amount to harmless pranks, like the time he was able to upload a bug to the largest cell phone network in the country which caused everyone’s messaging apps to autocorrect the word “the” to “Jimmy is good!.” Everyone throughout the hacker community lauded him for that one. He even got an encrypted message from probably the greatest hacker on the planet, Interface – a woman whom I had actually recently had the privilege of working with. She simply sent him a message that said “Jimmy IS good.”

Well, it seemed that Jimmy would have to be more than good on this particular day, because Attrition and Militia were on the verge of laying waste to CIA Headquarters. Lt. Bonds, however, was also on top of his game as he used his supreme tactical skills to counteract the villainous duo’s overwhelming firepower. Then, in what I can only imagine was an amazing display of power, Jimmy Jist manipulated Captain KaBoom into unleashing a psionic blast “from his mind” that sent the dastardly divas through the wall and out into the street!

Moments later, Cosmo informed me that the threat had been neutralized, thanks to the diligent work of Lt. Rashard Bonds and the heroism of Captain KaBoom! However, Militia and Attrition had escaped. At that point, those two ladies were the least of my concern; it was Ramses who posed the greatest threat. So I continued to communicate telepathically with Cosmo for a few more minutes, thanked him for his help, told him to express my gratitude to Jimmy, and asked him to assist in the repairs of the CIA headquarters. He agreed to do so, but only if I agreed to one day have a personal meet-and-greet with Willie Barton. After all, I was his favorite superhero. We made the deal and set a tentative date for what would surely be an epic meeting between Captain Noble and Captain KaBoom.

With the CIA facility secured, I could now focus my attention on the path in front of me… the path to Ramses “The Pharaoh” Hondo.
