087. MILITIA

My name is Captain Noble. I am a superhero, working for the US Government. This is an excerpt from my journal.

YEAR 11, DAY 72

CIA headquarters was under attack, and there wasn’t much I could do about it. I was thousands a miles away in Tibet, and possibly moments away from apprehending one of the world’s most dangerous super-villains, Ramses Hondo. I had to stay on task. I tried to reestablish communication with Cosmo Cortez, the telepathic teenager who had been brought in to extract information from Attrition, the warlord arms-dealer whom we knew to be associated with Hondo. But all I could hear through the coms device was screaming and explosions.

The Story

Finally, after a few moments of yelling for someone to answer me, I heard a voice – it was Attrition. I demanded to know what was happening. She was more than happy to inform me that our attempts to break into her mind had triggered a fail-safe. And that fail-safe came in the form of a hyper-human known as Militia.

The CIA actually had extensive files on Corrine “Militia” Harris, as I had encountered her on several occasions in the past. She was born to a middle class family in Harlem, NY. But when she was about 7 years old, her parents quit their office jobs and became missionaries to the African nation of Sudan. After over 75 years of civil war, the Sudanese people were finally rebuilding their cities and communities. Corrine’s parents were just two of hundreds of Americans and Europeans who traveled to the war-torn country to contribute to the restoration.

Peace, however, did not last. Within four years a small cabal of corrupt government officials had driven the country back into war. And now, with advanced weaponry and the rise of hyper-humans, the conflict was more brutal than ever. The vast majority of foreign missionaries and aid workers fled, or were driven out of Sudan. Those were the lucky ones. The not so lucky ones were captured or imprisoned or put to death. But the worst fate of all was suffered by the foreign children who were kidnapped and forced into becoming child soldiers.

Corrine was one of them. At the age of 12 she was taken by one of the Sudanese government mercenary squads, and placed into a camp where she was trained to fight, and brainwashed into becoming a warrior. Her parents, at first, stayed behind in an attempt to find her, but it was no use. They were eventually driven from the country, just like all the other foreigners.

It didn’t take long for Corrine to develop an insane bloodlust. She was already taller and bigger than most of the other kids in the camp, and she excelled in combat and weapons training. Furthermore, on what would have been her 13th birthday celebration, her natural hyper-abilities manifested. She had super strength and agility, and she developed the ability to coat her hands in a hardened epidermis, which made her punches feel like you were being hit by metal boulders.

By the time she was 17, Militia was one of the most revered and feared warriors in all of Sudan, and with her on their side the government finally crushed the rebels once and for all. The US, at the time, was content to not interfere, but when the Sudanese government attempted to impose military force on their neighboring countries, I was called in to assist. I last clashed with Militia in Kenya, and let me tell you, she was a handful. At the time, I was still just a young hero, trying to figure out how to truly master my powers. And she took advantage of my lack of experience. In fact, I’m almost sure I would have met my demise if not for the assistance of several African-born hyper beings like Shadow Star, The Big Five, and Makeda who came alongside me and helped to drive Militia back into Sudan.

Then just last year, the corrupt Sudanese government was, once again, overthrown and Militia was forced to flee the country. I had not heard anything of her whereabouts since then (of course, I’ve been quite busy with the likes of Sir Vellichor and Ramses Hondo) but it made perfect sense that she would find a common bond with Attrition.

And now the two of them were wreaking havoc on CIA Headquarters! I racked my brain for ideas. I was sure that my colleague Lt. Rashard Bonds had engaged them, but even with all of his skills and abilities, there was no way he could stop the two of them together. I looked to Shuttershock and was about to break the news to him that we would have to abandon our current mission and fly back home, when suddenly, I received a telepathic message from Como. He told me to stay focused on finding Ramses; everything at the CIA was under control…

…because Captain KaBoom was on his way!
